Heavy Loads, We Got You Covered

Working Load Limit

in Equipment Check

The Working load limit (WLL) is much different than the breaking strength or tensile strength.

Chain

  • Breaking point is the maximum stress before the product fails or breaks.
  • Working load limit is generally set by the manufacturer and is the maximum force that should be used when using the product.

The WLL is generally 1/5 to 1/4 the breaking strength. When using multiple components together like a ratchet with a chain, the working load limit used is the lowest rating of the components used. So, a chain binder that has a working load limit of 9,200 lbs is used in conjunction with a chain that has a WLL of 6,600 lbs, then the max forced used in the combination is 6,600 lbs or the the chain’s working load limit.

Working Load Limit = Breaking Strength * .2
6,000 lbs = 30,000 lbs * .2

Chain binders are essential in the heavy haul and flatbed transportation industry. Truck drivers are always having to secure their loads for proper and safe transport. If a driver doesn’t secure the load properly he could face:

  • Fines
  • Cause load damage
  • Cause injury or death
