Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration FMCSA
The FMCSA or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is part of the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
Mission Statement: The FMCSA’s primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
By enforcing a set of Rules and Regulations to ensure safety in motor carrier operations. The administration works with enforcement agencies at the Federal, State, and Local levels.
Of course there is a lot of information in the rules and regulations, and could be anyone’s full time job to learn, know, and understand them all. Fortunately, what a fleet owner, driver, shipper, and dispatcher need to know are likely different.
In the purpose of heavy haul trucking, we can focus on the rules of securement for example. And for this reason it’s a great reference when you need an explanation of how to secure a heavy vehicle.
You can carry the book around to look this information up, but the website is convenient for those who have an internet access and who want the most current regulations. As someone who works with customers and dispatches I find the parts and accessories necessary for safe operation, specifically subpart I protection against shifting and falling cargo and specific securement requirements by commodity type to be my most referenced rules.
For anyone involved in heavy haul trucking, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules and the website or book so that you can easily obtain the information needed when a situation arises.
